Nimbin is probably most celebrated today for its infamous 'Mardi Grass' festival. Every year in May the Nimbin Mardis Grass (yes, it is spelled correctly) festivities commence. To explain, Mardis Grass is one of the largest cannabis law reform rallies in the entire world. What began in the 1970s with the Aquarius festival, continues today with Nimbin Mardis Grass. Every year thousands of people unite in Nimbin to circumspectly object to cannabis drug laws. This protest is accompanied with amusing and aptly themed events, including a 'big joint parade', 'growers marathon', 'cannabis cup', 'bong throwing' and 'joint rolling' competition.
Although commonly referred to as the 'Amsterdam of Australia', and despite the efforts of Mardi Grass, cannabis is 100% illegal in all Australia.
